Brilliant post Tom. I'd definitely agree with your claim that Christianity is a kind of madness (ie. the way you define madness, not some snide, ill-thought-out atheist one-liner).

I also struggle this way, working in a church, but always feeling unable to completely give myself over to what God wants at each moment. Sometimes I just break down in tears and then try again. Thanks for your honesty. (Jym, San Fransisco CA, USA)

Tom,
First off, congratulations on getting the internship with Aldates - I'm sure you will learn a lot and have fun while doing it.
Secondly, thank you for putting yourself out there in this post. The vulnerability demonstrated here is probably what most of us Christians need to start with; as you said, admitting you have a problem is the first step. I definitely say I believe things but don't act on them. I guess I just wanted to encourage you about living in close community with other believers, in particular your co-interns. I pray that it will be a transformational season in which you will all sharpen one another through love.
I am so thankful that God made our paths cross and that you have this gift and love for expressing your thoughts and opinions. You truly are a blessing, even all the way on this side of the pond. :)

hi.
I found this site because I've just written a song called "The reason we live".
It is a little dangerous to answer questions like "What is the glory of God" in short, box like ways. But I did spend a wonderful week a few years ago at a ministry school on the topic of "the Glory of God". In summary, I came away with at least some understanding that God's glory is at least related to his moral impeccability. And included in that is the fact that mercy is not at all overlooked. That passage from exodus, where God passes in front of Moses, God's glory is revealed in the words expressed, ie. “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.” Many who read such a passage may only see harshness in the punishing to the 3rd and 4th generation, but we tend to overlook the wonder of his faithfulness to thousands (?of generations?) of those who love him. It is also noteworthy that God allowed the first generation after Moses into the promised land, when he could well have waited for 4 to pass.
In summary, His grace, his compassion, his faithfulness, and love, and also his justice are all, somehow, components of his glory.

Yup, Tom this blog is pretty swish! I loved this article on Rehab, something which seems very relevant for the glasses I am seeing the world through at the moment...stuff, so many people are getting torn apart trying to be the 'together' people, being good and right all the time. They don't seem to be able to cope when they stuff up!!! I feel that some church's also place huge emphesis on work ethics like your mate on the above comment points out. Need to realise that when people stuff up or fall short from expectations that perfect love is seeing them as a person, for who they are and not what they do... time to use that attitude towards people so that we can cast out one of the biggest fears of feeling not good enough and inadequate. Good thought prevoking stuff : D

Cheers Claire. I might try that; i do love sitting in a coffee shop with pen and bible in hand and just letting stuff develop from there...

I'm reading about "glory", not really helped by the miniscule theology section in Newcastle library, charting the interplay between glory and worship and the development of the concept of God's glory from Old to New Testament. For fun, mostly.

Any suggestions?
